If you have varicose veins, what should you do?

leg pain with varicose veins

Varicose veins are a disease of the veins, which manifests itself in an increase in size, a change in shape and a decrease in their elasticity. The superficial veins of the lower limbs, the venous plexus of the rectum, the veins of the portal system and the spermatic cord are predominantly affected.

The formation of varicose veins is facilitated by difficulties in the outflow of blood through the venous system during systematic, prolonged standing on the feet related to professional activity, compression of the pelvic veins by the uterus during pregnancy, congestion of the pelvic veins, for example, with systematic constipation, sedentary work, etc.

Sitting slows circulation and stagnates blood. Prolonged inactivity and sitting can damage the heart of people who sit for a long time, deep vein thrombosis can develop. Sitting cross-legged is harmful because it can press on the popliteal artery, causing congestion in the veins.

Clothing and shoes should not be tight, as this can also slow down blood flow. Walking around the house in grass, dirt or just barefoot improves circulation and strengthens the heart. Congenital weakness of the venous wall and insufficiency of the venous valves predisposes to the disease. Ulcers may develop over time due to blood malnutrition.

One of the early symptoms of the disease is heaviness in the legs, dull or sharp pain and night cramps. If left untreated, varicose veins harden and thicken over time, and ulcers and bleeding often appear on the legs.

Varicose veins that form in the scrotum are called varicocele (varicose veins of the spermatic cord). If they appear in the rectum, they are called hemorrhoids.

Phlebitis (inflammation of veins), varicose ulcers, severe itching, skin discoloration (which often turns copper red) are common complications of this condition. But only a small percentage of people with varicose veins develop varicose ulcers. People with varicose veins are thought to have congenital weak-walled veins.

But weak vessel walls are probably the result of poor nutrition, toxemia, denervation (decreased nerve condition) and lack of exercise. In most cases, when varicose veins develop during pregnancy, they disappear after childbirth. With the help of sufficiently active physical exercises, varicose veins formed during pregnancy can be eliminated even in the position of the woman.

Failed surgery to remove or drain the veins Using elastic stockings or bandages to support the veins is only half the measure and eventually leads to tissue weakening to the point that the condition becomes chronic or much more difficult to treat.

How to prevent varicose veins:

  • Avoid long periods of sitting in one position so that the muscles don't go numb, and long standing;
  • Do daily physical exercises for the legs: often climb up on toes, climb stairs on foot, swim, walk 1-3 km, stay in a pose with legs raised above heart level for at least an hour;
